Here’s a really nice 7 inch Dyer shell from the Battle of Island # 10.
As is the case on the other two on my site this one has a completely intact sabot, in that no flame grooves
were cut into it like is so often seen with these shells.
The sabot on this one, however,
was hit by a plow tip or disc,
causing a couple of cuts on the side.It’s all there; just slightly damaged. Iron has some
medium pitting but still very nice. On this one I didn’t coat the sabot but the new owner
can easily apply some satin polyeurethane to it if desired.

This is the absolute finest example of a 7 “ Dyer shell that I have ever seen. It was recovered from near
Ft. Rucker (Battle of Island #10) and sat on the digger’s porch for years. Rain running down the iron gave a beautiful
“copper” colored patina to the lead sabot. Grooves in the sabot are clear and sharp.
Iron is superb. Remnants of the wooden fuse plug remain in the nose. They just don’t get better than this one.

Here’s a really great condition 7 inch Dyer shell from the Battle of Island # 10. On this one the lead sabot
is completely intact with really nice rifling cuts and beautiful patina. Great iron.

Here is an 8 inch Columbiad shell recovered from Ft Rucker, which was a Confederate fort on the Tennessee side
of the Mississippi river, that was engaged in the Battle of Island # 10. This area is where all the 7 inch
Dyer rounds from Island 10 that you see came from. It is very rare to see any round balls from there. If a US shell it
had to be fired by one of the gunboats. There was a CS 8 inch Columbiad at Rucker so this may have been a drop.
In any case, a nice shell with an intact seacoast watercap fuse.
